About Bengals The Bengal cat is a fairly new breed of cat.
The first Bengal cats were bred by Mrs. Jean Mills in 1983 in the USA. She developed the basis for a breed which has a gentle, friendly temperament while also exhibiting the coat patterns of the Wild Asiatic Leopard cat. Modern breeders have continued to develop a cat with beautiful temperaments & to have the looks of the wild forest cats, with patterns of the Ocelot & Margay. With this in mind, breeders are achieving an even closer appearance to the Wildcat! This was Jean Mills final vision for the Bengal cat. The Asian Leopard cat has considerable variations in its markings - most commonly, arrows, spots, rosettes & marble. Bengal Cats are a medium sized cat; a male can weigh as much as 9kg & a female around 4-6kg. Bengal cats were originally from hybrid matings, developed over many generations, through a program of extensive cross breeding. The modern Bengal gene pool contains gene sources from a variety of breeds, mainly Egyptian Maus, American Shorthairs, Abyssinians, Ocicats & Domestic Shorthairs. All Bengal cats are direct descendents of the Wild Asiatic Leopard Cat.
Although most Bengal Cats are simply classed as "brown" there is quite a variation within the standard. "Browns" can be any shade of brown, eg. Sandy, Grey, Golden, Deep Red, Charcoal & so on. Another unique characteristic of the Bengal is that some individuals have a glitter affect over their fur, as if having been sprinkled with Gold or Diamond dust. This particular trait is highly desirable. Some other variants of coat colours include, "Snows" , "Silvers" & Silver Charcoals. Patterns of Spotted/Rossetted & Marble. Bengal Cats are very active & athletic and enjoy being up high, so an owner would benefit from providing a tall climbing - scratching pole. They also have a natural affinity for playing with or in water. So don't be suprised to find them in your shower or bath, & helping with the washing up! The Bengal is not a pet for people that want a lazy cat. Bengals are active, lively & playful and may even enjoy a game of fetch! They also can be taught to walk on a harnass & lead successfully. Bengals have all the charm, personality & are highly intelligent. They are also known to quite talkative at times and will delight in being right under your feet just to be with you! Bengals should have wonderful temperments & fabulous personalities. A bonus with a Bengal cat, is that they only shed their hair off twice a year, not all year like any other cat would. Bengals interact very well with other pets & children. They become real family members.
"Below are just a few examples of the spectacular colours & patterns that you can get in a Bengal."
One question you must ask yourself is : - Why do I want a Bengal?
Bengals are a fabulous playful, loving & loyal breed of cat but might not be suited to everyone as they have specific wants and needs.
I do suggest before adopting a Bengal, that you do your ground work 1st & don't be scared to ask questions, no matter how irrelivant you think they may be!

Ode to Breeder Ode to Breeder
If you are considering becoming a part of this fascinating breed, you should make sure you are well prepared. Ask questions and research plenty before purchasing. You need to be totally dedicated and also be aware that along with the incomparable elation of breeding these gorgeous "cub-like" little wonders called Bengals, there can also be some down sides.
Please read on.
I love my little kitty, she makes my house a home.
She always is my best friend, I never feel alone.
She makes me smile, she makes me laugh,
She fills my heart with love ...
Did some breeder breed her, or did she fall down from above?
I've never been a breeder, seen life through their eyes,
I hold my little kitty and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind and rain.
I've never sat the whole night through, waiting for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn.
I've never felt the heartache, of a little life in my hands,
This darling little baby, who weighs but 60 grams.
Should you do that instead of this ....or this instead of that,
Alone you fight, and hope one day, he'll grow to be a cat,
and bring joy to another being, and make a house a home,
You know it's all just up to you, you'll fight this fight alone.
Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,
Two hourly feeds for this tiny guy, throughout the day and night.
In your heart you know, you're almost sure to lose the fight,
to save this little baby, but God willing ... you just MIGHT.
Day one he's in there fighting, you say a silent prayer,
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five ... he's still alive, your hopes soar to the heavens,
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.
You take this little angel, and bury him alone,
With acheing heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask youself "Why do this? ... why suffer all this pain?"
But see the joy your kittens bring... it really self explains.
So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed",
Think about what they endure to fill anothers need.
When you buy a kitten and with your precious dollars part,
You only pay with money ... we pay with our heart.
